Needless to say, Google is the 800-pound gorilla that leads all other search engines in bloody rampages against questionable practices and sub-optimal website design. An Eventful Year for Mobile Computing

In early February, many industry observers saw large, unpredictable fluctuations in Google’s results for major classes of keywords, but the search giant’s spokespeople remained tight-lipped about the meaning of these phantom changes. After some speculation on possible e-commerce and mobile-computing optimizations, life went on for SEO experts and webmasters.

In mid-April, Google decided to strengthen its support for mobile-friendly computing. The company’s algorithmic updates slammed mobile-device results for millions of websites that Google’s back-room wizards saw as still being too focused on fuddy-duddy desktop platforms. Unsurprisingly, website owners all over the planet panicked over the potential for large traffic losses.

However, Google’s spokespeople made it plain that the company still placed primary importance on seeing high-quality content for all platforms. Furthermore, Google pointed out its online tools for helping laggard webmasters upgrade their sites to responsive mobile designs that worked equally well across desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets. Simply adjusting links for ease of clicking and paying attention to text readability promised to yield positive results for many webmasters reluctant to immediately tackle full-scale mobile-access redesign projects.

In early May, Google followed up on February’s mysterious flux and April’s minor “Mobilegeddon” earthquake with a stealthy change that rattled savvy website operators, many of whom saw marked changes in SERPs, search-engine results pages, for their favored keywords.

After initially staying mum about “Phantom Update 2,” Google confessed later the same month that it had indeed retrained its pet algorithms to weight quality factors differently. Despite alarmed reports of some large sites such as HubPages losing a major amount of mojo without clear explanation, SEO experts eventually found little overall impact across the global website community. Quality content, mobile-friendliness and navigability remained the foremost concepts for search engine optimization.

In mid-July, Google officially fired the opening salvos of its first Panda update for 2015. Widely known as Panda 4.2, the latest iteration of Google’s relentless quest to promote higher quality content and suppress unsavory tactics seemed to directly affect only about 2 to 3 percent of all search queries. Furthermore, Google indicated that its algorithmic changes for over major 200 signals of website quality would roll out slowly, taking perhaps months rather than weeks to complete. Still, many webmasters took heed of the message that Google would only increase its pressure to trim bloated websites for mobile accessibility and to focus on the best possible content.

Late in October, Google released a surprise announcement that the company’s RankBrain machine-learning project had become the third most influential ranking factor behind its search results. Given the urgent need for improved artificial intelligence to cope with semantic analyses of the crushing torrents of data that flow daily, the ultimate supremacy of AI technology in Google’s Hummingbird suite of algorithms for producing SERPs seems foreordained.

Moving into 2016, the beginning of January saw an early shakeup of Google’s search-evaluation algorithms that again resulted in large ranking swings for many websites. Google said little about the changes beyond acknowledging their normal practice of continuous “core updates,” refusing to confirm or deny widespread speculation about another Penguin update.

Finally, Google jolted the AdWords community in late February by trotting out major alterations to the program, including the abolition of right-column advertisements and an increasingly firm commitment to its new practice of slapping four advertisements in a row at the top of website pages.

Great Expectations for 2016

Led by Google, the search-engine industry in 2016 promises to tighten the screws further on the old boogeymen of keyword stuffing, low-quality content and questionable inbound links while placing ever more emphasis on responsive design and other mobile-friendly approaches. Of particular note is a strong Google push behind the open-source project called Accelerated Mobile Pages, meant to counter the competing Instant Articles project from Facebook. Most often posted are complaints regarding customer service, unwarranted debit or credit charges, or unethical business practices forced upon employees at a particular company.

Scambook is set up much like any other public forum, with each complaint registered being the starting point for a communications thread. There are two steps involved in filing a complaint. The first is to select a name of a company or person, and the second is to identify the entity type, such as a corporation, community organization, or individual person. The complaint can even be listed as a business or personal telephone number.

After filing a complaint, users will be notified by Scambook if other individuals list the same company, individual, or telephone number. In theory, the keywords used will be recognized by the major search engines, with the complaint thread showing as a search result when others browse the Internet.

How This Affects Legitimate Businesses
Depending on the number of complaints or the relevance of the keywords used, the thread on Scambook.com may appear as a search result for those who are seeking information about a product or service. For example, if a person is searching online for a particular style of women’s fur coat, the results page may show several companies that sell the product but may also include a link to Scambook. This is because complaints have been filed by those who feel that one of these fur coat retailers have conducted poor business practice.

The potential for damage to legitimate companies is obvious. First of all, the complaints in the forum thread on Scambook may not even be real. There is no signup process required in order to post on this complaint board, meaning that competitors may be falsely posting concerns in order to grab business away from a legitimate retail merchant.

Secondly, other companies who market the same line of fur coats can also suffer a setback. Some consumers may decide that it is too risky to purchase their desired product online, meaning that all merchants are affected by what may not even be a legitimate complaint.

Businesses can do much to protect themselves against this kind of attack. RIPOFFREPORT.com is a website created to supposedly help consumers find legitimate, honorable businesses and avoid scam artists and fraud. The website, however, appears to not be doing its job as intended. On the site, commenters can “file reports” about bad experiences they have had with people, companies or businesses. In reality, although the intention may have been good, the site is set-up to blackmail companies, not help consumers.

The website may feature some valid posts, but mostly the “reports” aim to degrade, slander and humiliate people and companies alike. It is suspected that ex-employees who are unhappy with the business or company competitors who are not doing well create the negative posts. While this may seem all fun and games, or even a little bit helpful for consumers, it is actually life changing for those the reports are about. People who write reports on Ripoffreport.com cannot change their comments or reports, nor can they delete them if they change their mind or their story ends up changing. A comment can be added, but the comments are placed low on the page in an unnoticeable place.

Victims of negative reports, which are not always accurate, spend thousands of dollars to remove the report from Google search results. If gripes with companies are resolved, the listing remains. While some reports may be accurate or true, the majority of them lack sufficient evidence or proof. Pissedconsumer.com is the latest in a growing trend of websites devoted to the more negative aspects of shopping both in store and online. Based in New York City, the site popped up as a means to provide consumers with a location where they can share their frustrations about various companies without fear of it being removed immediately. Unfortunately, users are not protected from court orders or notarized letters. Interestingly enough, there is also a section for businesses where they can pay to get access to monitoring the comments being posted and, if enough is paid monthly, access to the contact information of the consumer posting the complaint.

Hurting the Individual
For complainers, you can either use a regular account or a premium account at $5.99 per month. Either way, you have to have a login so pissedconsumer.com can track your information. The form is very simple. Fill out the title of your complaint, explain what happened and then add the company name and give it a category. You are even given the chance to post media to provide evidence for the wrong you are claiming. They have also employed an upvote and downvote system akin to the one popularized by Reddit. If popular, the complaint will shoot to the top of the list and grab more people’s attention. Likewise, downvotes will shoot it to the bottom where no one will see it. This, of course, is just asking to be abused by companies with dummy accounts not wanting their reputation tarnished.

Unfortunately, this makes you a target for big corporations. We’ve already seen the unholy power they wield in the court system, and since they can buy your information, there is no guarantee your post will remain anonymous. While this may be skirted by smaller companies that can’t afford the privilege, corporations are more than happy to shell out extra money to silence those that try to call them out.

Hurting the Company
For companies, there are three types of memberships to choose from. They are known as Social Monitor, Customer Service Program and Enterprise Business Solution. All three grant access to profile customization and e-mail notifications when reviews and comments are made about their brand. Customer Service Program adds on verification badges, the ability to reply in comments directly to the complainers and a means to contact the poster. The Enterprise Business Solution does not come with a listed price but guarantees the company access to the complainer’s personal contact information prior to the complaint being posted, hinting that complaints undergo a wait time before reaching the public’s eye.

This is clearly a scam to scare companies into buying a way to fend off people that can’t complain to them directly or are complaining without any reason to. Much like the tactics of the Better Business Bureau, smaller companies will not be able to afford the power to stave off trolls. This is extremely detrimental to those just starting out. In addition, anyone can post anything about any company, meaning many of the posts could very well be lies.

The internet has turned into a wealth of knowledge most could never imagine having 25-30 years ago. It’s crazy to think we used to get our info from encyclopedia’s, which meant a trip to the library. 1. RipOffReport.com – They are numero uno when it comes to showing up for people’s names and company names. According to SEMRush, here are their details:


What you’ll see is they rank on the first two pages for around 160,000 keywords. And if you look at their “Top Keywords” list, their traffic isn’t comprised of just a few keywords, it’s distributed throughout all of those 160k keywords. You’ll also notice they spend ZERO money to market the site, but their traffic is between 1.5-2 million visits per month.

2. PissedConsumer.com – Coming in right behind them is pissedconsumer. They had a sizable drop back in the end of 2013, but just jumped back up considerably.


They’re not far behind ripoffreport and must have made a nice change to their site to get back in the positive view of search engines.

There are others, but these two are the ones that come up most often. They usually have very derogatory titles that jump out at you when you view search results. Because of how strong these sites are, you really have to put time and money into improving your name in the search results. The King of Sex…Not Who You Think

IntercourseThe adult industry is undoubtedly one of the biggest markets out there and even though most of our nation frowns upon the thought of it, it’s big business. I understand we don’t want our kids to see it, but they will…eventually. It often makes me wonder if we weren’t so against it, if it would still be as big as it is. Or would it be even bigger.

When it comes to the online market, the adult industry has always been big because it gave the user the anonymity that most preferred without having to pull over to some abandoned looking building on the outskirts of town and do the ultimate walk of shame…twice. The adult related keywords are highly searched and if you were to take a guess who would dominate these terms, like ‘sex’, who would you guess? How about Funny or Die?

I hadn’t received a newsletter from them in a while, until the other day. It made me wonder if the website has lost it’s position as it had a couple of years ago. What I found was kind of shocking. If you do a search for “sex” in Google, you’ll find FOD right at the top. What is even more amazing is to view what SEMRush knows about them. They dominate the sex related keywords. They do have videos that parody sexually related skits, but it’s far from being a porn site. What they have done is found an angle to shoot traffic through the roof, which I’m sure coincided with ad revenue. When imagining Will Ferrell having a business meeting to discuss all of this, all I can see is this.

According to the SEMRush traffic graph, their traffic almost doubled from Nov’13 to Dec’13

Then look at their keyword domination and you’ll see that ‘sex’ makes up for a third of their traffic and they have over 40k page one results with most being adult related

Since search engines really aren’t keen on porn, why not make your site relevant to a busy market in some form so you can boost your traffic? FOD’s biggest competition, when it comes to this topic, is Break.com. Their graphs show they fair a little better in the number of page 1 results.

Does PageRank Matter?

PagerankIf you have been around since search engines started popping up, you will remember when Google blasted into the scene and their PageRank algorithm took the world by storm. Everyone started scrambling to figure it out because the better PageRank you had, the better your site ranked on your search terms. It all came down to how many links pointed to your site and how good the PageRank was from the sites linking to you. This form of link building was what everyone sought because it wouldn’t just help your rankings, it also improved your own PageRank. Think of it like an illustration of how popular your site was.

After many updates with many names, focusing on what the PageRank of a page is really taking a shot in the dark. So the question asked, “Does PageRank Matter?” … the answer is “Yes”, however, not to anyone outside of Google. We’ve known for a while that toolbar PageRank is usually an indicator of a pages rank many updates before what you are seeing. In other words, a PageRank on January 1, 2012 we can see is probably what it was many months prior. As of this post, it is going on 9 months since the last update has happened and Google has admitted their pipeline to send updates to the toolbar is broken and there is nothing planned to fix it.

In summary, PageRank should not matter to you anymore. There are many other things to focus on and while PageRank might be broken, link building is just as important today as it was 10 years ago.
